The TEAC Hi-Res Editor is a free lunch

Before I simplified my computer audio setup and upgraded to a new Windows 11 PC, I abandoned trying to play DSD audio with JRiver Media Center.

Now, I have stumbled across software that plays the files and does much more.

I found it on the TEAC website after seeing a UD-507 product review and being impressed by the comment from the brand manager about designing for more immersive musical experience for listeners.

It’s primarily a file editor, although I’ll be using it as a simple single file player (it’s not a file manager).

It can edit 2-channel audio source (mono/stereo) high-resolution DSD/PCM files in DSD formats of 2.8M/5.6M/11.2 MHz and PCM formats up to 384 kHz/32-bit.

The Windows version uses the Windows standard audio driver WASAPI or ASIO 2.1, whilst with the Mac version 11.2MHz DSD/DSF is not played back natively, but converted during playback to another supported sampling frequency.

Fade-in/out point can be set using waveform display, and it converts audio file formats from DSD to PCM, and PCM to DSD. Also converts frequencies and PCM recording quantization bit depths. There’s a combine function that joins two files.

And it’s a free download from the TEAC website!

It’s a shame that the exceptionally appealing appearance of TEAC products isn’t accompanied by outstanding audio performance. Reviewers keep pointing out better performers at lower prices.

So I won’t be buying any of those great looking devices at those prices, but thanks for the handy tool TEAC.
