If you un-compress recordings, what do you get?

An interesting thread here.

I used a DBX dynamic range expander for years, and was pleased with the sound …. Until I heard music that was not compressed during recording or mastering (see STS Digital, for example).

Now I realise that the effect may not have had much relation to the musicians’ intentions.
